As we start to age things start to ache. For me it started in my mid-30's. Now I'm 10 years older and my friends, colleagues, other peers and I are all starting to notice chronic pain. Back issues, knee issues, neck issues, shoulder issues. Lots of issues! Sometimes its due to an incessant focus on one type of physical activity - many runners and skiers have knee issues for example. For others its due to an injury long ago. Often its simply a result of our day to day movement patterns or lack thereof - so many of us spend all day sitting. And then there is the pain and discomfort that is a mystery. We don't know where it comes from or why its there but it is.
This mystery pain, as Francisco explains it, is often due to stress or emotions. Emotional burdens and stress show up in our body - maybe as shoulder pain or neck pain, or maybe somewhere else entirely. Why is that? Because emotional stress and strain manifest themselves as blockages in our system and these blockages hurt.
So pain causes stress (we can't have a quiet mind when the body is in pain!). But stress also causes pain. The two are so deeply interconnected that when we are able to relieve physical pain it relieves stress and emotional strain as well.
I have to say 4 and a half days into this Kaiut retreat and my back, shoulder and neck pain are virtually non-existent. I feel calmer, happier, more patient, loving, grounded and grateful. And it all feels really really good.
